Why does the heat source need a thermostat?
Because unregulated it keeps climbing, and a snake will lie against warmth even as it burns. The damage often isn't visible until it's infected, which is why this is the first thing to fix.
What's wrong with live prey?
A rodent that fights back can seriously injure a snake, and frozen prey removes that risk entirely. Thaw it properly rather than using a microwave, and warm it before offering.
Mine won't eat. Should I worry?
Refusing food happens around shedding, after a move, or when temperatures are off – check those first. Track weight: eating nothing while holding weight is different from losing it, and the second needs a vet.
How do I find a vet who knows snakes?
Ask any practice how many reptiles they see, and look for a herpetological society or reptile keepers' group locally. Do it before there's an emergency – respiratory problems move quickly.
Does the enclosure type really matter?
Yes, mostly for holding heat and humidity. A mesh‑topped glass tank loses both constantly, which is why the readings never match what you set.
