The Problem
'Europe is too expensive.' No. Tourist Europe is expensive.
🗺️
Default circuit

London, Paris, Rome is the most expensive way to see Europe for the first time.

📅
Peak months

Travelling in high summer means the highest prices, the longest queues and the worst heat.

🍽️
Eating where the sights are

A few streets away from any famous monument, the same meal costs considerably less.

🚄
Transport bought late

Trains and flights between cities get expensive quickly when left to the last minute.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
How cheap can Europe realistically be?
Far cheaper than most people assume, though it depends heavily on region and season. The savings come from a few decisions rather than lots of small ones: where you go, when, whether you're in dorms, and how often you eat out. The plan gives a per‑day figure for your version rather than a headline number.
Is central and eastern Europe really better value?
Generally yes, and it's the single biggest lever on the budget. The architecture, history and rail network are excellent, cities are English‑friendly, and it's less crowded than the western circuit in summer.
When should I travel?
Spring and early autumn are the sweet spot – noticeably cheaper than high summer, pleasant weather across most of the continent, and everything open without the queues. If you're tied to school holidays, the first or last week of the period helps.
Is a rail pass worth it?
It depends on how many countries and how far apart. Passes tend to pay off across several countries and long legs; for one or two countries, or if you can book well ahead, individual tickets are usually cheaper. Buses and budget airlines are worth comparing on long stretches.
How reliable are the costs?
They're planning estimates, and prices move constantly – check them against booking sites before you rely on any figure. Also check your own visa requirements and current travel advice for the countries on your route.
