Questions
Everything you need to know.
What's the difference between collision and comprehensive?
Collision: you hit something (car, pole, pothole). Comprehensive: something hits you or your car (deer, hail, theft). A falling tree is comprehensive; hitting a tree is collision.
Should I drop comprehensive on a 12-year-old car?
If your car is worth less than $3,000 and you're paying $500/year for comp+collision, drop it. You'd pay the car's value in 6 years. We include a simple formula.
Does my insurance cover a rental car?
Usually, your policy extends to a rental for the same coverages (liability, comp/collision). But check your policy – some exclude it. We suggest asking your agent before renting.
What happens if my friend drives my car and crashes?
In most states, insurance follows the car. Your liability and collision would apply, but your rates could go up. The guide covers permissive use.
How much liability should I have?
At least 100/300/100 ($100k injury per person, $300k per accident, $100k property damage). If you have assets (house, savings), consider umbrella insurance. We explain why minimum limits are dangerous.
