The Problem
"Is my child developing normally?" is the question every parent asks alone.
😰
Googling milestones leads to a spiral of worst-case diagnoses

Type in 'my 18-month-old isn't talking much' and you'll find everything from 'totally normal' to 'could be autism' in the same search results — with no way to know which applies to your child.

💸
The 15-minute well-visit doesn't cover everything you want to ask

Pediatricians are thorough — but the appointment moves fast. Most parents leave having forgotten half of what they wanted to discuss, including the thing that kept them up at night.

😵
Every child is different, but most milestone lists don't account for that

Premature babies, bilingual households, only children, children in daycare vs. at home — development looks different in different contexts, and generic checklists don't reflect that.

🤷
Not knowing whether to worry — or how to act if you do — is the hardest part

Parents often sense something is worth paying attention to but don't know whether it warrants an appointment, a specialist, or just a few more weeks of observation.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Is this a diagnostic tool?
No — and that's an important distinction. This tool educates parents about typical developmental ranges, helps them identify observations worth discussing with a pediatrician, and provides activities to support their child's growth. It does not screen for, diagnose, or rule out any developmental condition. All clinical assessment is done by qualified healthcare providers.
My child was born premature. Does that affect the milestones?
Yes — significantly. For babies born before 37 weeks, developmental milestones are typically measured against corrected age (adjusted for prematurity) rather than chronological age, until around 24 months. The tracker asks about prematurity in the intake and adjusts all milestone guidance accordingly — so you're not measuring your child against a standard that doesn't apply to them.
We speak two languages at home. How does that affect the language milestones?
Bilingual development is normal and healthy — but it looks different from monolingual development in ways that often worry parents unnecessarily. Bilingual children may mix languages, may have a smaller vocabulary in each individual language while having a larger total vocabulary overall, and may reach certain language milestones slightly differently. The tracker accounts for bilingual households and interprets language milestones accordingly.
My child's pediatrician said everything is fine, but I still feel like something is off. What should I do?
Trust your instincts — and advocate for them clearly. The Concern Deep-Dive prompt gives you specific language to describe what you're observing in clinical terms that your provider can evaluate. The Pediatrician Visit Prep includes guidance on how to respectfully but clearly request a referral to a developmental specialist if you feel your concern wasn't fully addressed.
What ages does this cover?
The tracker covers development from birth through early school age (approximately ages 0–7). The milestone frameworks and activity generators are calibrated for newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and early school-age children. You can re-run the snapshot at any age milestone — every few months in the first two years, or every 6–12 months for older children.
