The Problem
You have to choose a major — but you have no idea what you want to do.
😵
Around a third of students change their major at least once

Which is fine — but every switch can add a semester and a bill. Starting from a researched choice doesn't guarantee you'll stay, it just makes the first guess a better one.

😰
You don't know what careers each major leads to

An English degree isn't only teaching and psychology isn't only therapy. Most majors open a much wider range of work than anyone tells you at seventeen — and a few are far narrower than they look.

💰
Nobody shows you the cost against the salary

Passion matters and so does the loan payment. The number that actually predicts regret is what the monthly repayment takes out of a first salary, and almost nobody works it out before enrolling.

🤷
Your interests don't point neatly at one thing

You like science and art. You're good with numbers and with people. That's normal, and it means the answer is a shortlist with trade-offs rather than one obvious match.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
How accurate are the salary numbers?
Treat them as rough orientation, not data. The AI works from general knowledge rather than a live feed, and pay varies enormously by region, employer, and year — so it gives ranges, flags them as approximate, and points you to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is free and official. Checking there is a step in the checklist, not an optional extra.
What if I don't know what I'm good at?
Most people at this stage don't. The assessment asks about subjects and general strengths — problem solving, writing, helping people — and finds patterns from your answers. There's also a prompt to ask a couple of teachers and friends, whose answers are usually more accurate than your own guess.
Can I change my major later?
Yes, and around a third of students do. It can cost you a semester and some credits, which is exactly why the decision matrix includes how hard each of your top three is to switch out of after a year.
What if the major I love doesn't pay well?
Then you weigh it rather than being talked out of it. The tool is instructed not to steer you away from a subject you love on money alone — it gives you the honest trade-off, the option of a minor or double major, and the calculator so you can see what the debt would actually mean on that salary.
How does the calculator work?
You enter tuition and living costs, years of study, what's covered by aid or family, and a realistic starting salary. It shows what you'd borrow, the monthly payment over ten years, and what share of a first salary that eats — the number that tends to predict whether a degree feels affordable or like a weight.
Does this work for graduate school too?
The same principles apply, and the field guide flags which majors need postgraduate study to be worth much — which is one of the more important things to know before committing to a four-year path that only pays off after seven.
