Questions
Everything you need to know.
Why pay the creditors who chase least?
Because contact volume is inversely related to consequence. Non-priority creditors — cards, loans, overdrafts, catalogues — chase aggressively because chasing is all they can do. Priority creditors, meaning housing, energy, water, local taxes, fines and maintenance, often write once and then act, and the consequences reach your home and your utilities. So the loudest voice is usually the one to pay second, and redirecting isn't defaulting — it's triage.
Can this fix my credit file?
Partly, and honestly: nobody can remove accurate negative information from a credit file. Not a company, not a lawyer, not for any fee — so a paid credit repair service is selling either something impossible or something you can do yourself for nothing. What you can do free is get your file, check every entry, and dispute genuine errors, which are common. Beyond that it's time and a record of payments made as agreed. Anyone promising speed is selling.
Should I pay a debt management company?
Almost certainly not. Most countries have free, regulated, non-profit debt advice services that do everything a fee-charging company does — without taking a cut of money that could otherwise repay your creditors, and with relationships with those creditors that individuals don't have. If you've already paid someone, that's extremely common and nothing to feel foolish about; check what the fee buys and whether it can be cancelled.
What's the fastest improvement available?
Usually checking what you're entitled to, which most people skip because they assume working or having savings disqualifies them. Very substantial sums go unclaimed every year. Free independent entitlement calculators exist, it takes about twenty minutes, and being wrong costs nothing — and it's worth asking specifically whether a claim can be backdated, because in some systems a delay costs real money. Income before expenditure, every time.
Is this financial advice?
No. Nothing here states a rule, threshold, entitlement or timescale as fact, because those differ by country and change constantly — and any formal debt solution with legal consequences must be discussed with a free regulated adviser rather than chosen from information alone. What this gives you is the order of operations, the questions to ask, and the traps to avoid before you speak to one.
