The Problem
Cold air pours through your windows.
🔍
You don't know where it's coming in

It feels like the whole window, and it's usually two or three specific gaps.

🪟
Assuming it's the glass

Single glazing is cold to touch, but the moving air is nearly always coming past the frame.

🏠
Renting, so nothing permanent

Plenty of the standard advice involves adhesive or caulk you can't undo.

💸
Quoted for replacement

New windows are a large job, and a sound frame with bad seals rarely needs one.

What you get
Everything you need to close the gaps rather than replace the window.
🔍
Finding the leaks
Run a damp hand slowly round the frame, or hold a strip of tissue near the edges and watch it move – plus looking for daylight and feeling the sill. Mark each spot before you buy anything.
💡
3 tiers of fixes
Reusable putty‑style draught strip and a sill snake first; shrink film and foam strip next; V‑strip and thermal blinds after that – ranked so you start with the cheapest thing that might do it.
🔧
How to fit each one
Preparation, the actual steps, and the mistakes that stop it working – film needs a clean dry frame and a hairdryer on low, strip needs the gap measured first.
🏠
What's safe if you rent
Each option marked removable or permanent, with what comes off cleanly at the end of a tenancy and what needs asking about first.
💨
Don't seal it airtight
Homes need ventilation – sealing every gap without keeping trickle vents and extractor fans working pushes moisture into the walls, and you swap a draught for damp.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
How do I find exactly where the air comes in?
Wet the back of your hand and move it slowly round the frame, the sill and the catch – moving air feels noticeably colder on damp skin. A strip of tissue held near the edges works too, since it flutters where there's a draught. Don't use a naked flame near curtains and moving air; it's the version you'll see recommended most often and it's the one worth skipping.
Does shrink film actually help?
It does, particularly on single glazing – it traps a layer of still air against the glass, which is much of what double glazing does. It needs a clean dry frame, and a hairdryer on a low setting to pull it taut. The drawbacks are that you can't open the window until spring and it's visible up close, so it suits rooms you don't sit in more than a living room.
Will any of this damage the frame?
The reusable putty‑type strips peel away cleanly and can be lifted at the end of the season. Film kits use double‑sided tape, which usually comes off with gentle heat but can leave a little residue. Adhesive foam strip is the one to be careful with on painted wood. If you rent, stick to the removable options and ask before anything permanent.
Won't sealing the windows cause condensation?
It can, and this is worth taking seriously. Homes need air movement to carry moisture out, so if you close every gap while also drying laundry indoors and running no extractor fan, you may trade a draught for damp and mould. Keep trickle vents open, run extractors in the kitchen and bathroom, and air rooms briefly each day. Seal the draughts, not the ventilation.
When do the windows actually need replacing?
When the frame is rotten or has moved, when the glass is cracked or a sealed unit has misted up inside, or when a window won't close or lock properly. Those are jobs for a professional. If the frame is sound and the problem is worn seals and gaps, sealing is the sensible first step.
