Everything you do to reassure them makes it worse
Approaching, reaching and eye contact all mean something different to a frightened dog.
🫥
Hiding and not eating

The first days in a new home are often more frightening than the kennel was.

🤲
Kindness misread

Leaning in, reaching out and looking them in the eye all register as pressure.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
They haven't eaten in two days.
Common in the first days, and most start eating overnight when nobody's about. Leave something strong‑smelling in their safe space and leave the room – but if nothing's eaten after a few days, that's a vet call rather than a behaviour question.
Should I make them interact so they get used to me?
No – that's the one thing that reliably sets you back. Every session where you sit nearby and leave without approaching is the evidence they're waiting for.
It's been three months and they still hide.
For a dog from a severe background that's within range. Look for small changes rather than transformation. If there's genuinely no movement at all, a veterinary behaviourist is the next step.
Will they ever be a normal dog?
Some become outgoing; many don't, and that's not failure. Comfortable at home, bonded with you, able to walk without panic and capable of play is a good life for a dog who's been through this.
What about medication?
For fear severe enough that no learning can happen, it can lower things enough for the work to start – but it's a veterinary decision, not something to arrange yourself, and it never replaces the daily sessions.
