The Problem
You stand in front of the fridge, confused — is this still safe to eat?
20% of food waste is from date label confusion
That yogurt that expired yesterday? Probably fine. That chicken from 2 days ago? Maybe not. Without clear rules, you guess — and often guess wrong.
You don't know what the dates actually mean
Use By? Sell By? Best By? Packed On? They sound similar but mean completely different things. No one ever explained the difference.
You throw away food that's perfectly safe
A family of four throws away $1,500 of food per year. Most of it is still safe to eat. You're literally throwing money in the trash.
You're afraid of food poisoning
You've heard horror stories. You'd rather be safe than sorry. So you toss it. But without real knowledge, you're either wasting food or taking risks.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
What's the difference between Use By, Sell By, and Best By?
Use By: safety date — don't eat after this (baby formula only). Sell By: store inventory date — food is still safe for weeks. Best By: quality date — food is safe to eat, might taste slightly less fresh. Most dates are NOT safety dates. The Decoder explains each.
Can I eat yogurt 2 weeks after the expiration date?
Probably yes. Yogurt is fermented — it lasts 1-2 weeks past the date if unopened. Signs of spoilage: mold, separation, off smell. If it smells like yogurt and looks normal, it's fine. The Dairy Guide has specifics for each product.
What about eggs? How long do they last?
Eggs last 3-5 weeks past the pack date when refrigerated. Test them in water: if they sink, they're fresh. If they float, toss them. Don't rely on the date on the carton.
Can I eat meat that's past its sell-by date?
Sell-by date on meat is for stores. If you bought it and refrigerated it properly, it's safe for 1-2 days past that date (for chicken) or 3-5 days (for beef). Always smell and touch — slimy or off smell = toss. The Meat Guide covers everything.
Do canned goods ever expire?
Canned goods last 2-5 years past the date if the can is in good condition. Never eat from bulging, rusted, or leaking cans (botulism risk). Otherwise, they're safe indefinitely — quality may decline but safety remains.
Do I get a printable safety chart?
Yes. The AI generates a complete food safety quick-reference chart you can copy and save. Print it and put it on your fridge.
