Can they ever be left alone together?
Not while the child is small – young children can't follow rules reliably without an adult there, however gentle the animal is. The plan gives guidance for older children, but it always depends on both of them.
The dog growled at my child. Should I tell it off?
No – a growl is a warning, and punishing it teaches the dog to skip straight to biting next time. Calmly separate them, work out what caused it, and get professional help if it recurs.
My child is too rough. How do I teach gentle?
Practise on a soft toy first, use the same phrase every time, and end the interaction calmly when they can't manage it. Small children need a great many repetitions before it sticks.
We have a baby. How does this work?
It doesn't rely on rules at that age – it relies on barriers and an adult present, every time. Introduce the scent first and keep the animal's routine as unchanged as you can.
The cat scratched my child.
Clean it properly and watch for infection, since cat scratches can need medical attention. Then give the cat high places to escape to – one that can get away rarely needs to scratch.
