The Problem
Your kitchen isn't messy. It's misplaced.
🏃
You cross the kitchen 14 times to make one dinner

Your workflow zigzags because ingredients, tools, and surfaces aren't organized by task. You're walking a marathon in a 100 sq ft room.

🗄️
Your pots live across the room from the stove

Items were placed in cabinets randomly when you moved in. Nobody designed the layout by how you actually cook. Everything is in the WRONG zone.

😤
Nobody wants to unload the dishwasher

If plates and glasses lived NEXT to the dishwasher: unloading takes 3 minutes instead of 10. The chore everyone avoids becomes the chore nobody minds.

🔍
You spend 2 minutes hunting for the colander

It's 'somewhere in that cabinet.' Along with 15 other items piled on top of each other. Not because you're messy — because the cabinet has no assigned purpose.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
My kitchen is tiny. Can zones still work?
Small kitchens benefit MORE from zones because every step saved matters more when the space is tight. In a galley kitchen: one side becomes prep+cooking, the other becomes cleaning+storage. In a studio kitchen: vertical storage (hooks, wall-mounted racks, magnetic strips) multiplies your zones within a single wall. The Zone Blueprint adjusts for small, medium, and large kitchens — small kitchens just have more overlap between zones.
What if my family puts things back in the wrong place?
Two solutions: 1) Label the shelves during the first 2 weeks — 'POTS' on the shelf by the stove, 'MUGS' by the coffee maker. Labels train habits. After 2 weeks: the placement feels natural and labels become optional. 2) Make the RIGHT spot the EASIEST spot. If putting a mug back in the correct cabinet requires less effort than anywhere else: people will naturally comply. Zones work when the logical spot is also the laziest spot.
Do I need to buy organizers or bins?
No purchases required — the system works with your existing cabinets and drawers. However, a few cheap additions can improve it: drawer dividers ($5-10, keep utensils separated), turntable/lazy susan for deep cabinets ($8, makes back items accessible), shelf risers ($10, double your cabinet capacity). These are optional upgrades, not requirements. The $7 zone plan + $0 in reorganization = full transformation.
What about the 'kitchen triangle' rule?
The kitchen triangle (fridge-stove-sink) was designed in the 1940s for single-cook kitchens. It's not wrong — proximity of those three matters. But ZONES go further: they organize storage around TASKS, not just appliance proximity. Your stove triangle can be perfect but if your pots are stored by the sink and your spices are in the pantry: you're still walking a marathon. Zones place every item at the point of use.
How long does the reorganization take?
One weekend. Saturday morning (2-3 hours): pull everything out and declutter — expect to remove 20-30% of items. Saturday afternoon (1 hour): clean empty cabinets. Sunday (3-4 hours): place items into assigned zones. Total active time: 6-8 hours. Then a 1-week test period where you note what feels right and wrong. Tweaks after the test week fine-tune the last 15%. Most people say Monday morning cooking feels completely different.
