Why is the same test cheaper elsewhere?
A hospital outpatient laboratory typically adds a facility charge on top of running the test, covering premises and staffing. An independent laboratory doesn't. The analysis itself is the same, which is what makes the comparison worth putting in writing.
What do I need before disputing anything?
The itemised bill with procedure codes. A summary statement gives you a total and nothing to check; the itemisation names each test and how it was charged, which is what you compare against published rates. Ring billing and ask for it specifically.
Does a written dispute work better than phoning?
Usually, because it creates a record and puts the comparison in front of someone who can act on it. Phone calls are useful for asking questions; the letter is what tends to produce an adjustment. Send it in a way you can prove was received.
Can I choose which laboratory my samples go to?
