The Problem
Imaging prices vary enormously for the same scan.
🏥
Several prices exist

The billed rate, the self‑pay rate and the insurer‑negotiated rate are different numbers for the same scan.

🧾
Errors are common

Duplicate lines, the wrong code and the wrong body part all happen, and none of them are caught unless you ask for the itemisation.

🤐
Discounts aren't offered

Prompt‑payment reductions, self‑pay rates and assistance schemes generally exist and are rarely mentioned first.

😔
The first 'no' isn't the last

The person answering the phone often can't authorise a reduction, which isn't the same as the facility refusing one.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Can a medical bill actually be negotiated?
Often, yes – reductions, self‑pay rates, assistance schemes and instalment plans all exist, though what's available differs by facility and by country. Nothing is guaranteed, and asking costs you a phone call. The worst outcome is the bill stays as it was.
What should I do first?
Ask for the itemised bill. A summary figure tells you nothing, whereas the line items show duplicates, the wrong procedure code, or the wrong body part. Finding an error changes the conversation before any negotiating starts.
Insurance has already processed it. Is that final?
Not necessarily. The amount left to you after processing can still be discussed with the facility – a prompt‑payment discount or an assistance scheme may apply. If you think the insurer's decision itself was wrong, that's a separate appeal to them.
What if they say no?
The first refusal usually comes from someone without authority to agree anything. Ask for a supervisor, then put it in writing, then apply for financial assistance if the facility runs one. If none of that works, your country will have a route for complaining about billing – the plan sets out the order.
Will an unpaid bill affect my credit?
Rules differ by country and change periodically, so check the current position where you are. The general principle holds everywhere: negotiate before a bill goes to collections rather than after, because your position is considerably stronger while the facility still holds it.
