The Problem
Four weeks in. Scale hasn't moved.
🎯
Because mat pilates is low-intensity and non-continuous

It expends far less than brisk walking for the same time.

📈
And resistance work can hold the number flat for weeks

Muscle up, fat down, scale unchanged. People quit there.

📏
Meanwhile the class promised a flatter stomach

Fat doesn't leave the area you're exercising.

🚶
Then the session was the only movement in the day

Which is the half of the plan that was missing.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Will pilates make me lose weight?
Not on its own, and it's worth knowing before day one rather than at week four. Mat pilates is low-intensity and largely non-continuous, expends considerably less energy than brisk walking or cycling for the same time, and the evidence for it producing meaningful weight loss by itself is weak. Weight responds mainly to what's eaten and to total daily activity across the whole day — so keep the pilates, and put the weight expectation where it can actually be met.
So why do it at all?
Because it's genuinely good at several things: core and trunk strength, control, flexibility, balance, and with reasonable evidence, helping low back pain. It's low-impact and scalable, needs almost nothing for mat work, and it's frequently the form of movement people actually keep doing — which beats a theoretically better one they abandon. Resistance-based work also helps preserve muscle during weight loss, which matters for how that loss goes.
Will it flatten my stomach?
Fat can't be lost from the area being exercised, so strengthening the abdominals doesn't reduce abdominal fat — that's the specific false promise attached to core work and to classes named after flat stomachs. What abdominal work does give you is strength, control and trunk stability, which are real and worth having, just not the same thing.
Why shouldn't I track my weight?
Because it'll mislead you on this programme specifically. Resistance-based work can add muscle while fat reduces, which leaves the number flat or even rising for weeks while the body is changing — and people quit at exactly that point believing it isn't working. Track what you can do instead: how long a position holds with control, how many reps before form breaks, range of movement that was tight. Those change earlier and more visibly.
Is there anyone who shouldn't just follow a video?
Yes. Abdominal separation is common after pregnancy and standard abdominal exercises can worsen it, so postnatal work wants a women's health physiotherapist or a properly qualified instructor. With osteoporosis or low bone density, exercises involving forward bending of the spine are a specific caution. And a back or joint condition or recent surgery wants clearance first. A few sessions with an instructor is also the highest-value spend for anyone, because the technique points are hard to self-correct from a video.
