Questions
Everything you need to know.
Do I need to register a company before I start?
Often not before your first invoice, though this genuinely depends on where you live and what you're selling. The toolkit covers when operating as an individual is sufficient and when a formal structure starts to matter for liability, tax and what clients will accept — and it tells you which authority to confirm it with rather than guessing on your behalf. What it won't do is let you spend your second week on incorporation instead of on finding someone who'll pay you.
Will this affect my unemployment benefit or severance?
It can, and it's one of the first things flagged rather than left for you to discover. Rules on earning while claiming, and on starting a business while receiving support, vary a great deal by country and sometimes by region — some places have specific schemes for exactly this situation. The guidance tells you to check with the body paying you before you invoice anyone, because finding out afterwards is expensive.
What if I have almost no savings?
Then the answer changes, and you'll be told so plainly rather than encouraged into it anyway. With a very short runway the realistic move is usually contract or part-time work alongside building, which the toolkit treats as a strategy rather than a failure. It also defines your stop point in advance — the runway level at which taking a job is the right decision — because that's much easier to set calmly now than in month five.
Isn't freelancing just another job?
At the start, largely yes, and that's the point rather than a criticism. It pays within weeks instead of months, costs almost nothing to begin, and uses a skill someone already valued enough to employ you for. Plenty of businesses grew out of exactly that first year. Starting with the fastest revenue doesn't lock you out of anything — running out of money does.
Is this financial or legal advice?
No. It's a planning tool for thinking through your own numbers and sequencing. It doesn't know your tax position, your local rules or your circumstances, and it's written to say so wherever something depends on them. For anything involving tax, company structure or benefits, confirm it with a qualified professional or the relevant authority before acting.
