The open road, properly planned.
Daily distances that don't wreck the trip, what the fuel will actually cost, and stops worth the detour — sorted before you're tired and three hours from anywhere.
The Problem
A road trip without a plan is just a long drive.
The last push to the hotel is where it goes wrong
Booked accommodation three hours further than anyone has left in them. Tired driving is the one risk on a road trip that genuinely matters, and it's created at the planning stage.
Maps give you the fastest route, not the best one
And the drive time it quotes assumes you never stop — which is why day one always runs two hours long.
Fuel is the cost everyone underestimates
It's simple arithmetic that nobody does until the third fill-up, and detours quietly add a few hundred miles to the total.
Without a plan, every meal is whatever's at the exit
Not because the good places aren't there, but because you find out about them fifteen minutes after driving past.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Will it name specific diners, motels and attractions?
Public land, parks, viewpoints, historic sites and towns, yes — those are stable. Individual businesses, no: roadside places close, move and change hands constantly, and a confidently named diner that shut three years ago is worse than no suggestion. You get the kind of place, the stretch of road it tends to be on, and how to spot a good one — busy with local vehicles at meal times being the most reliable signal there is.
How does the cost calculator work?
Distance, your vehicle's economy, fuel price, nights away and daily spend. It shows gallons, fuel cost, food and lodging, and adds fifteen percent for tolls, parking and the unplanned stop. Fuel prices vary by region and by the week, and detours add distance — so it's your estimate to check, not a quote.
How much driving a day is sensible?
Four to six hours, less with young children or a single driver, with the first and last days shorter. If your distance and days don't fit sensibly the plan says so and suggests an extra night rather than quietly handing you nine-hour days.
What does it say about driving tired?
That the answer is to stop and sleep, not coffee and not opening a window. Microsleeps happen with the eyes open and nobody notices their own — which is why the plan builds breaks in every couple of hours and avoids booking accommodation further than the day has in it.
I'm travelling with kids. Does it account for that?
Yes — shorter segments, stops that actually work for children rather than ones adults think should, and the plain rule that nobody is left in a parked car even briefly, because interiors reach dangerous temperatures within minutes.
Can I adjust the route after it's generated?
Yes, and adding a night is usually the best edit. The plan is deliberately conservative on daily distance, which is the setting most people are tempted to push and most regret pushing.
