They say they're too old to learn. What do I say?
That it's the instructions failing them, not their age. One task taught properly and finished alone does more to change that belief than any amount of encouragement.
iPhone or Android?
Whichever you have. Matching devices means you can say 'the green icon at the bottom left' and know it matches their screen when they ring you.
How do I teach without sounding patronising?
Never say it's easy, never take the phone from them, and point rather than tap. Sit beside them rather than lean over them.
What about scams?

How long until they're comfortable?
