Many of those apps also have commercial relationships with 'clean' brand alternatives they recommend. This decoder gives you an evidence-based, context-aware translation — including when a flagged ingredient is genuinely worth avoiding and when the concern is overstated by apps that profit from the fear.
I don't know any chemistry. Will I actually understand the output?
Yes — that's exactly what it's designed for. The decoder translates every INCI name into its common name and plain-language function. How do I know if an active ingredient is at an effective concentration?
Ingredient lists are ordered from highest to lowest concentration. An active ingredient that appears in the first five ingredients is likely at a meaningful concentration; one that appears near the end — especially after preservatives — is probably at trace levels. Are parabens, sulfates, and silicones actually bad?
