Food, drinks, somewhere to sleep and the things you forgot add up to more than the ticket.
Only the ticket budgeted
Everything after it goes on the card and gets counted the week afterwards.
Buying water all weekend
Most festivals have free refill stations, and most people arrive without a bottle.
Booking a hotel by default
Where you sleep is usually the single biggest cost after the ticket.
No hearing protection
It's the one thing you can't undo afterwards, and it costs very little to bring.
What you get
Everything you need for the same weekend at a fraction of the cost.
Tiered packing list
What you can't go without, what makes it comfortable, and what camping adds – plus the things people most often leave at home.
Budget beyond the ticket
Six categories costed for your festival – accommodation, food, drinks, transport, extras – with a daily limit and room for one deliberate splurge.
4 accommodation options compared
On‑site camping, car camping, a shared rental or a hotel – what each typically involves and when to book it.
Daily tracker
A simple running total for each day, so the weekend's spending is visible while it's happening rather than afterwards.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Are proper earplugs worth it?
Yes, and it's the recommendation worth taking seriously – festival volumes are high enough that hearing damage is a real risk, and it doesn't recover. Musicians' earplugs lower the volume evenly instead of muffling everything, so the music still sounds like music. They cost very little relative to the ticket.
Does the cooler and bottle thing actually save much?
It's usually the biggest single saving after accommodation – drinks and food bought inside the gates all weekend add up quickly. Most festivals have free water refill stations, and breakfast and lunch from your own supplies leaves the budget for one proper meal a day.
What if outside food and drink aren't allowed?
Rules vary considerably – most restrict alcohol and glass, many allow sealed food, snacks and empty reusable bottles. Check your festival's published policy before packing, since it also determines bag size and what gets confiscated at the gate.
Is camping actually bearable?
With the right kit, yes – a sleeping mat matters more than the tent, and earplugs matter as much at three in the morning as they do at the stage. Without those, it's a long weekend. The list covers what makes the difference.
How do we split costs in a group?
Agree beforehand what's shared and what isn't – campsite, fuel and accommodation split evenly, food and drinks individually. Settling it before you go prevents nearly all the awkwardness afterwards.
