Questions
Everything you need to know.
Will this save us $5,000 to $15,000?
Nobody can promise that, and a specific savings figure is exactly what makes wedding advice untrustworthy — costs vary enormously by country, region, season and day of the week, and no vendor prices are visible here. What you get instead is arithmetic run on your own numbers and the structure that decides where money goes. The calculator will show you what ten fewer guests frees up in your situation, which is usually a larger figure than any negotiation produces.
Why start with the guest list?
Because almost every major cost scales with headcount: catering, drinks, table hire, linen, cake portions, invitations, postage, transport, and the size of venue you need. So the budget is largely decided before a single vendor is chosen. Couples spend months negotiating while treating the guest number as fixed, which is backwards — and guest numbers also cross thresholds rather than rising smoothly, where one more person means a bigger marquee or a second server.
What are the hidden costs?
The ones outside the headline quote. Service charge and gratuities, which can add a substantial percentage. Taxes, delivery, setup and breakdown. Overtime rates and what time each supplier's cover actually ends. Corkage, which can erase the saving from bringing your own drinks. Cake cutting fees. Meals for photographers and the band, who aren't on your guest list. And the ones couples forget entirely — postage, alterations, trials, the registrar fee, and a wet-weather plan.
Is the wedding surcharge real?
Yes, and it isn't purely opportunistic, which is worth knowing before you get annoyed about it. Wedding work genuinely differs — weekends, longer hours, higher stakes, far more coordination than an equivalent private event. Concealing the occasion causes real problems later and isn't the answer. The useful move is comparing like-for-like specifications and asking directly what differs between the wedding package and the standard one.
Why does the budget keep growing?
Because each addition seems small against a large total, and a series of small additions is how budgets go — it isn't a failure of discipline. The defence is deciding a total and treating it as fixed, so adding something means removing something rather than raising the number. Alongside that, hold a contingency back at the start and treat it as already spent, because almost every wedding costs more than the first plan and hoping to underspend isn't a contingency.
