The Problem
The cheap end runs out first — and nobody plans for it.
💸
A registry weighted to the top end puts guests in a corner

The affordable items go in the first fortnight. Everyone who books late is left choosing between spending more than they have and arriving with nothing — and some choose the second and feel awful.

🏠
You register from a standard list, not from your cupboards

Couples who've lived together for years end up given a second toaster, because the list was built around what registries usually contain rather than what's actually missing.

🧾
Cash funds take a cut and nobody mentions it

Most platforms charge a percentage of each contribution plus processing, usually borne by you. It comes straight out of what people intended to give.

Registry details on the invitation read as a bill

It's the one etiquette rule almost everyone agrees on, and it's easy to get wrong. The website, yes. The invitation itself, no.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
How many gifts should we register for?
The calculator works it out from your guest count and how much choice you want to offer — roughly two options per guest is comfortable. More useful than the total, though, is the split: it shows how many sit at the affordable end, which is the number that determines whether late-booking guests have anything to choose from.
Will it recommend specific products and shops?
Types of item and price bands, not brands, models or current prices — an AI can't see what's in stock or what it costs where you are. It also won't claim what discounts a retailer offers, since completion-discount terms differ by shop and change. You get the categories and the checks to run before committing.
We already live together. Is a registry still worth it?
Yes, but it needs building differently. The list gets weighted toward upgrades, replacements and things for entertaining rather than a starter set — which is why it asks what you already own before suggesting anything. Registering from a generic list is how established couples end up with a second toaster.
Can we ask for cash instead?
Yes, and it covers the part usually skipped: platforms take a cut of each contribution plus processing, generally borne by you. Check the exact fee before choosing one. It also advises against a visible goal amount with a progress bar — that turns a gift into a fundraiser and makes people feel their contribution is being measured.
Where do the registry links go?
On your wedding website, and by word of mouth when people ask. Not on the invitation itself — that reads as billing people for attending, and it's the etiquette point almost everyone agrees on. The wording throughout is written to offer an option rather than to make a request, because gifts are never obligatory.
When should we finish it?
Mostly done before save-the-dates go out, then topped up as it empties — the reminder counts down from your date. The affordable items go first, so the useful maintenance job isn't adding more expensive things; it's making sure there's still something under the lowest band a fortnight before the wedding.
