The Problem
Tow companies break the rules constantly. They know most people won't fight back.
😰
Up to 40% of predatory tows have at least one legal violation

Missing or non-compliant signs, excessive fees above state caps, failure to notify police, improper after-hours surcharges — violations that give you grounds to dispute but that most people never know to look for.

💸
The average wrongful tow costs $300–$500 — and tow companies count on you to absorb it

Most people pay, fume, and move on. Tow companies price their violations into the business model because the settlement rate is high and the dispute rate is low.

😵
State and municipal towing ordinances are written in regulatory language most people can't read

Your rights exist in city code, state statute, and consumer protection regulation. Finding them, reading them, and applying them to your specific situation requires hours of research — or one AI prompt.

🤷
Consumer attorneys don't take $300 towing cases — but small claims court does

You can't get a lawyer for this. But you can file in small claims court for $30–$75, represent yourself, and win — if you know what the violations were and how to make the case.

Questions
Everything you need to know.
Is this legal advice?
No — this is consumer rights education about towing regulations, not legal advice. Towing laws vary significantly by state and city, and the toolkit helps you understand the relevant requirements and identify potential violations. The documents generated are templates based on commonly applicable consumer protection principles. For complex situations or amounts over $1,000, consulting an attorney or your local legal aid office is advisable.
My car was towed from private property, not a street. Does this still apply?
Yes — private property tows are actually where most violations occur and where consumer protection laws are most commonly applicable. Private property towing is heavily regulated in most states: signs must meet specific size, height, and placement requirements; police must be notified within a certain timeframe; fees are often capped; and after-hours retrieval surcharges are regulated. Predatory towing from private lots is one of the most common consumer rights issues in towing law.
What if I just paid and don't have the invoice anymore?
Request a copy of your itemized invoice from the tow company — they are required by law in most states to provide one. If they refuse, that refusal itself can be documented as part of your complaint. Your credit card or bank statement showing the charge is also useful evidence. Take photos of the tow location and signage as soon as possible, even after the fact — the signs will still be there.
The tow company said they'll sue ME if I dispute this. Is that real?
This is an intimidation tactic. Tow companies rarely sue customers for legitimate dispute amounts — the economics don't work in their favor, and a counter-complaint would likely go badly for them. The dispute letter and city complaints you file are civil consumer rights actions, not accusations of crime. A tow company threatening legal action for a legitimate consumer dispute is itself potentially actionable. Document the threat in writing and include it in your city complaint.
How often do towing disputes actually succeed?
When there is a genuine procedural violation — particularly inadequate signage or fees above state caps — dispute success rates are high, especially when city complaints are filed alongside the demand letter. Tow companies operate under municipal licenses and a pattern of violations can result in license suspension. They have significant incentive to settle documented complaints quietly. The people who lose disputes are usually those whose tow was legally compliant from the start — which is why the legality analyzer runs before any document is generated.
